Assumed knowledge
  1. Students who undertake activities where interaction with patients/the public is required, such as in field or clinical placements/visits and in University clinics and gyms, must demonstrate that they have a current National Police Clearance and a current National Criminal History Record Check (Child-Related Clearance) from the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI), which is valid for the duration of the placement
  2. Students must have a 'Provide First Aid Certificate', and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR) prior to the commencement of any field placement

Topic description
This topic will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a formalised placement (minimum of 140 hours) in an exercise and/or sport setting. Upon successful completion of this topic, students can apply their knowledge and skills to operate effectively and in an ethically responsible manner.
Educational aims
Students will be provided with the opportunity to:

  1. Apply and refine current knowledge and skills in exercise science
  2. Develop new skills in areas such as communication and teamwork within an Exercise Science and inter-professional framework
  3. Develop an awareness of workplace culture and expectations in Exercise Science
  4. Develop specific technical competencies within an Exercise Science framework
  5. Attain competency in exercise assessment, prescription and delivery and other exercise science area
  6. Meet the minimum number of 140 practical hours, context and knowledge to achieve professional accreditation.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate effective application of knowledge and skills in a work context

  2. Apply effective verbal and non-verbal communication skill

  3. Apply the scope of practise for an exercise scientist, sport scientist and an exercise physiologist

  4. Demonstrate the integration and application of their learning through practise

  5. Critically evaluate the elements of risk associated with the professional practice of exercise science and the strategies to minimise this risk

  6. Adopt the Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Code of Professional and Ethical Practice.
