In this topic the student is positioned within the profession of nursing with the expectation of undertaking continuous personal and professional development, demonstrating professional responsibility and accountability, and providing evidence-based care, clinical governance and leadership in an interprofessional team. The concepts of clinical governance, leadership and supervision are further developed in relation to the registered nurse role.

The aims of this topic are to:

instil a capacity to identify the complexity of ethical problems in professional practice and demonstrate the ability to use moral reasoning in developing solutions according to ethical standards
instil a deeper knowledge of the impact of social, political, cultural, environmental and legal considerations on the role of the professional nurse working as a unique member of the interdisciplinary team
consolidate information literacy and fluency in the use of information and communications technology (ICT) in health care.

On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

identify, interrogate and communicate issues relating to social, political, cultural, environmental, ethical and legal considerations for the professional nurse within the context of a multidisciplinary team
negotiate their way within the practice context based on a sound understanding of legal and ethical standards that are associated with evidence-based nursing care of vulnerable clients
identify and justify strategies to respond to factors that negatively impact on patient- and self-advocacy, with particular focus on:
- challenges to the autonomy of the nurse and the patient
- legal and moral conflict in the workplace relating to the quality of care and protection of patients
explain the relationship between information technology, evidence-based practice and the provision of health information to optimise the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery
demonstrate the ability to be a continuing reflective practitioner.
