Topic description

This topic prepares students for international work opportunities, placing emphasis on communicating in global business contexts. The emphasis is placed on developing systematic ways of identifying relevant from non-essential information and then effectively and appropriately communicating what is relevant to a wide variety of audiences. Students will learn to regard effective business communication in terms of a series of strategic choices, including choosing from among a repertoire of tones and styles appropriate in different situations and with different audiences.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Prepare students to Identify and evaluate diverse communication goals of different audiences and make effective choices about the tone, style, and form the communication should take by recognizing and discussing how to tailor communication to specific audiences
  • Support students as they develop skills to select and strategically utilize traditional and new communication media by learning about the applications and preferred usages of those media
  • Help students plan, create, and complete a variety of business documents-for example, memos, articles, emails, blog posts, proposals, and reports-using appropriate headings, layout, and typography by applying rules of document purpose and design
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Produce a range of documents suitable for print or electronic distribution for internal and external government and bureaucratic communications and business and corporate communications
  2. Research, assess, and synthesise a range of source materials to produce complex documents for specific purposes
  3. Identify and analyse stakeholder attitudes and positions, and write persuasive documents to communicate complex situations and ideas
  4. Discuss ethical standards and their implications when developing business and other professional documents
