Core topic Sociology major
Topic description
Does society still exist? Or are we first and foremost individuals? How can we make sense of social worlds? In this topic, we dive into contemporary approaches in social theory to investigate the building blocks that underpin our social existence. Students will be facilitated to develop a response to questions concerning, for example, action, power, cultural meaning, and social critique.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- explore contemporary debates in social theory
- provide opportunities for the further development of skills such as, critical analysis, logic, argument contstruction and development, and independent learning
- encourage constructive and informed participation in seminars and tutorials
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
- describe, compare and evaluate a range of sociological perspectives relating to a range of problematic in classical and contemporary social theory
- undertake research that is critical and independent
- understand how sociological perspectives are applied to contemporary social issues
- use academic conventions in assessments
