Topic description
This topic will include a series of tutorial-based conversations around experimental design and patternmaking, providing opportunities for students to expand their thinking, and ways of looking at their surroundings. Students will be required to explore a range of techniques through project work centring around concept development.

The expected outcome will be that students create pieces of design work and garments to present, for example, through exhibition or a catwalk.
Educational aims
This topic aims to give students the opportunity to:

  • develop confidence to experiment with silhouette using draping techniques and fabric manipulation

  • show critical analysis of their own work and problem solving abilities

  • expand their patternmaking, garment construction and design skills

  • develop work from concept to completion
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic students will be able to:

  • create and analyse experimental designs using draping and fabric manipulation.
  • critically analyse their own work, to identify problems and find solutions
  • communicate their skills through the creation of runway ready pieces
  • use advanced level technical knowledge and skills to enhance their abilities as fashion designers
