Topic description
Working with Children and Families contains three 'strands' of knowledge transfer. Firstly, policy and sociological contexts of working with children and families are explored. Secondly the complexities of working with families and children are considered in light of differing practice contexts such as statutory and non-statutory work. Finally, the topic explores working collaboratively with children and families to develop interventions.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to understand and apply social work practice and theoretical processes when working with children and families.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Discuss child centred practice in relation to social work
- Explain the parameters of relevant state and federal legislation pertaining to the treatment of children, young people, their birth families and carers in a variety of contexts
- Adapt knowledge of processes to appropriately develop interventions with children, families and communities
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of children and families
- Analyse critically a range of issues and interventions focussing on children and young people but also relating to birth families, carers and others in inter-professional settings
