Topic description

This topic explores the implications of advanced technologies, transformative business models and national/domestic digitalisation policies and strategies for the future of work, their own professions and workplaces. It will enable students to critically examine the likely impact of digitalisation on work and debates surrounding the 'fourth industrial revolution' and Industry 4.0 and relate learnings from these business dimensions of digitalisation to learnings of its socio-economic and socio-cultural dimensions. The topic will provide students from business, commerce, law, public administration, health, science, and engineering disciplines with a foundational understanding of Industry 4.0, digitalisation, high performance workplace systems and workplace change management. It will provide opportunities for students to interact with advanced technologies including automation, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). Students will learn how to apply a number of tools that enable the assessment of digital maturity and organisational performance in workplaces.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the future of work in the digital age. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and capabilities to contribute to the design and management of technological change processes that take account of the human dimensions and potential socio-economic implications of technological and workplace change.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a multi-disciplinary understanding of the implication of digitalisation for the future of work, workplaces and society by linking theories and practices from these disciplines
  2. Conceptualise technological change processes within social, political and economic contexts
  3. Have an appreciation of inter- and trans-disciplinary theories of technological change and work
  4. Understand and participate in debates surrounding the fourth industrial revolution and Industry 4.0
  5. Apply tools to assist with the management of workplace and technological change
