Topic description
This topic allows third-year Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing) students to focus on their own projects in an intensive workshop environment. It also aims to encourage them to attempt a longer, more experimental or collaborative project. Students will develop their editing skills, practise oral presentation and have the opportunity to work collaboratively. In addition, they will develop an advanced understanding of genre and writing strategies as well as of the creative industries.

It is expected that students will attend the Adelaide Festival of Arts Writers' Week.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop and extend creativity

  • provide opportunities for students to develop and critically analyse their own creative work

  • extend students' skills as workshoppers, editors, readers, presenters and listeners

  • develop an understanding of genre and advanced writing strategies

  • extend students' understanding of current issues about literature and publishing

  • further develop collaborative skills

  • develop an understanding of the creative industries through seminars, special workshops and Writers' Week (in alternate years)
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate that they can participate effectively in a workshop environment

  • demonstrate that they can read, listen and research critically

  • demonstrate an understanding of genre and advanced writing strategies

  • demonstrate that they can edit extended or complex pieces of their own and their peers' work

  • evaluate their strengths and weaknesses as writers and set goals

  • identify some opportunities available in writing and publishing

  • demonstrate creativity by producing original work
