Topic description

In this topic students will experience a range of approaches and undertakings that reflect professional contemporary dance practice. The practical sessions will focus on advanced technical performance and research skills including structured improvisation. All students will be expected to participate through discussion that will include self and peer analysis and reflects on concepts and ideology of the work explored.

To further support the demands of the training students will extend their fitness through advanced classes in a physical exercise discipline (e.g. Yoga or Pilates)

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with opportunities to:

  • Develop complex performance attributes that are associated with the various genres of contemporary dance practice, through research and performance application
  • Increase the performer's technical dance capacity and range
  • Expand the practice and knowledge of advanced improvisation techniques
  • Implement advanced exercise programs both in and out of the practical sessions
  • Build a proactive physical training practice that allows for external as well as self-managed improvement/development
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Evaluate, explore and develop attributes associated with a variety of movement techniques and styles
  2. Present contemporary dance technique at an advanced level
  3. Perform and structure improvisation based on varied stimuli
  4. Demonstrate advanced control, variation and articulation of movement in improvisation
  5. Display advanced alignment, posture and control in conditioning exercises
  6. Integrate knowledge of the conditioning discipline into their practice of the form
