Topic description

The topic will explore the advanced science core to clean technology. It will explore in depth the science and environmental, social and financial implications of current and new clean technologies. There will be a particular focus on environmental impacts and assessments. Additionally the topic will offer simulated work integrated learning activities and intensive workshops.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with an advanced knowledge to understand important environmental, ecological and industrial processes, their impact on society and the environment and potential approaches to minimise those impacts. The topic will also simulate existing network events and forums built around integrating understanding of environmental, social and scientific information, designing effective monitoring strategies, implementing models and screening tools to create blueprints for novel sustainable approaches to clean technologies.

The topic will ensure that students can:

  • Understand, evaluate and apply modern scientific principles in clean technology
  • Retrieve and present scientific information both orally and in writing to scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Show proficiency in critical analysis of information and a capacity to solve problems
  • Analyse and evaluate numerical data
  • Appreciate the role of science in business
  • Understand current industrial practices related to clean technologies and their financial, social and environmental issues and potential solutions to these issues
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Understand how to integrate scientific, social and environmental knowledge gained into a industrial/governmental setting
  2. Understand the role of effective networking and team-building skills associated with scientific problems based in clean technology
  3. Assess a broad range of scientific and non-scientific problems through critical analysis related to clean technologies
  4. Appreciate the environmental and socio-economic issues involved in the development of new technologies
  5. Present and defend an opinion related to clean technology both in written and oral form
