Topic description

This topic is designed to provide students with an understanding of current issues that are affecting, shaping and influencing global tourism or events industries. Issues of climate change, political change, terrorism, sustainable development policies, and the (un)ethical behaviours of the tourist will be covered within the topic.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with opportunities to understand a range of contemporary issues, key problems and their impacts on the tourism or event industries
  • Discuss relevant academic concepts and theories that can be used to analyse and evaluate contemporary issues
  • Develop students' understanding of the implications of current issues for the strategic management of tourism destinations
  • Enhance students' written and oral communication skills suitable for progress in the tourism or event profession
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explore a range of contemporary issues and their impact on the tourism or event industries
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the implications of key issues on tourism strategic management policies
  3. Assess critically the utility of contemporary research in the context of the management of tourism or event industries
  4. Evaluate a range of competing perspectives relating to various issues affecting the development of tourism or event industries
