Topic description
Students will work toward the creation of a single piece of prose fiction which engages with theories and conventions of popular genre writing. Through reading selected fiction and non-fiction, students will consider what is unique about popular modes of writing, while the topic’s comprehensive lectures will enhance individual research. In a workshop environment, students will put theory into practise, drawing on these concepts as inspiration for their own original works.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with the opportunity to explore prose fiction writing in areas not previously examined

  • to develop understanding of a second area of popular genres and relevant theories to the craft of fiction writing

  • provide a framework for students to locate their work in a generic context

  • provide a workshop environment within which students are able to develop existing critiquing skills and reflect on the critiques provided by their peers
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • recognise and analyse how other writers have engaged with theories and conventions of second genre fiction

  • locate their own and others' work in contexts specific to more than one genre of prose fiction writing

  • respond at an advanced level to workshop critique and feedback, to develop their own creative writing
