Topic description
This topic introduces students to the development and application of applied linguistics tools for research. Drawing widely on examples from discourse practices in cross-cultural contexts, details of steps involved in selecting a method appropriate to a research question will be systematically examined. The emphasis will be on participants evaluating existing research, equipping them to design, carry out and report on a research project. This topic is intended for students considering Honours and for anyone wishing to design and carry out an investigation of their own or in any workplace.
Educational aims

  • observe and analyse the ways language is used in speech and in writing in the student's own discipline or professional area of interest

  • provide students with opportunities to develop an appropriate method to a research question
Expected learning outcomes

  • demonstrate their understanding by applying general concepts in specific ethnographic contexts

  • map out multiple perspectives to investigate their daily experiences with language in various socio-cultural contexts

  • evaluate scientifically the ways language is used in a broad range of communicative situations
