Topic description
This topic introduces students to the development and application of applied linguistics tools for research. Drawing widely on examples from discourse practices in cross-cultural contexts, details of steps involved in selecting a method appropriate to a research question will be systematically examined. The emphasis will be on participants evaluating existing research, equipping them to design, carry out and report on a research project. This topic is intended for students considering Honours and for anyone wishing to design and carry out an investigation of their own or in any workplace.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- develop and apply linguistic tools for research by a systemic examination of examples from discourse practices in cross-cultural contexts
- observe and analyse the ways language is used in speech and in writing in the student's own discipline or professional area of interest
- provide students with opportunities to develop an appropriate method to a research question
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- demonstrate their understanding by applying general concepts in specific ethnographic contexts
- map out multiple perspectives to investigate their daily experiences with language in various socio-cultural contexts
- evaluate scientifically the ways language is used in a broad range of communicative situations
