Topic description

This topic allows students to gain experience in the tourism industry by working in collaboration with an industry partner on a project that has a strong community focus.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with practical experience, contacts in the tourism industry and exposure to current practices in the relevant sector of the industry (linked to the project)
  • Develop a sound understanding of issues relating to the tourism industry and the needs of the local/regional community
  • Enable students to contribute to the development of research materials that can be used by industry partners to help benefit local/regional community members
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate capacity to work within a professional and suitable environment on a community-based project
  2. Discuss how a tourism industry/government agency operates, and the challenges faced in relation to community engagement strategies
  3. Demonstrate capacity to effectively communicate with community members and appropriate professionals in the tourism industry
  4. Apply an understanding of analytical skills, report writing techniques, and discuss a greater awareness of the challenges associated with developing research projects that primarily focus on community engagement strategies
