Topic description
This topic gives an overview of the Biblical Wisdom writings. Interpretation draws upon a range methodological approaches, with a particular focus on key theological scenes throughout these writings. Relevance of these theologies to contemporary understanding of the world and society are explored.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • offer an overview of the concept of biblical wisdom and the wisdom writings
  • gain a knowledge and understanding of the content of the wisdom writings and their historical and cultural settings
  • gain an understanding of the forms and literary features of the wisdom writings
  • explore the main theological themes in the wisdom writings
  • develop critical approaches to the study of the wisdom writings
  • allow the wisdom writings to offer meaning in a contemporary context
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will be able to:

  • explain what biblical wisdom means
  • describe the cultural and historical situation that fostered wisdom writing
  • discuss interpretive and theological issues, and their relevance in a contemporary context
  • apply appropriate exegetical methodologies to a variety of wisdom texts
