Topic description

This topic builds on skills and knowledge gained in HLTH1010 Research and Study Skills 1 and HLTH2107 Research and Study Skills 2. The primary focus of this topic is knowledge translation, with students synthesising their knowledge of evidence-based practice and knowledge translation to effectively address topical health issues pertinent to their area(s) of interest. Alongside this, students continue to develop appreciation of ethics in health research, and prepare for the health workforce.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Consolidate knowledge of evidence-based practice as it applies to research and students’ area of specialty
  • Further explore ethics in health research
  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills to competently identify research areas for investigation, to generate research questions and to use research to solve those questions
  • Fortify students’ ability to critically evaluate others’ research
  • Develop students’ skills in the clear and coherent communication of health research using both written and oral methods
  • Develop students’ employability skills and job seeking skills
  • Encourage students to work independently and develop accountability for their own professional development
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to:

  1. Describe the guidelines for ethical conduct in health research
  2. Critique literature in a speciality area of health research
  3. Communicate research findings in written form
  4. Analyse and interpret experimental data using appropriate quantitative methods or qualitative methods (using statistical software)
  5. Apply knowledge of their area of speciality to formulate written and oral responses to key selection criteria for an employment application in health
