Topic description

This topic examines both the concepts and role of community development in the lives of people who are marginalised in our communities. Community participation and lifestyle choices provide the context for exploration of the issues, principles and practices related to community development. This topic also provides an opportunity for students to learn about basic principles of community development, project management and submission writing. Particular populations who are currently, or who are at risk of social isolation and limited community participation will be considered, including individuals living with disability.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

  • Current research within local, national and international perspectives relating to community development and funding sources
  • Recent social history and benefits of community development in facilitating opportunities for the social inclusion of individuals who are socially isolated, or at risk of social isolation from their communities, including Indigenous communities
  • Role of community development and relevance of participation in community activities of choice and the link to quality of life
  • Principles of identifying and preparing a community development project to create increased opportunities for socially marginalised individuals
  • Principles of preparing a community development project for funding submission
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically analyse current literature relating to community development
  2. Develop a sound knowledge of the meaning and benefits of community participation for individuals who are socially isolated, or at risk from their communities
  3. Deduce community needs/issues and strengths for a specific population who are socially isolated, or at risk from their communities
  4. Design a community development project proposal and funding submission to increase opportunities for participation in community activities
