Topic description

This topic will include a focus on key elements, concepts and approaches of economic evaluation, which will include economic evaluation of new health technologies (for example, medical devices and telehealth procedures). An emphasis will also be given on the role of economic evidence in relation to informing public health funding decisions.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide students with applied knowledge of health economic evaluation models and approaches and to enable students to identify and critically appraise key inputs into health care decision-making; this includes economic evidence which is used to inform public health funding decisions. This topic will equip students with an ability to critically interpret economic evidence and the quality of published economic evaluations regarding public health.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to:

  1. Make use of concepts and approaches for economic evaluations in relation to public health practice and policy
  2. Critically appraise key steps in conducting an economic evaluation including model-based evaluations
  3. Identify, value, and analyse health outcomes and health care resources
  4. Critically interpret inputs into decision making and the role of economic evidence to inform public health funding decisions
  5. Critically appraise published health economic evaluations
  6. Make use of and apply skills to design an economic evaluation and communicate the findings concisely
