HLPE3540 Drugs, Politics and Public Health

This topic introduces students to the politics of policy development and the ideas and theoretical frameworks that have shaped public policy responses to alcohol and other drug use over time. Current issues are examined in the light of past experience, with attention to the policies and programs that have proved most effective in reducing drug-related harm.

This topic aims to:

• Increase students' knowledge of the ideas that have influenced public policy responses to alcohol and other drug use over time
• Provide students with opportunities to apply these ideas to current alcohol and other drug policies and strategies in Australia and internationally
• Develop students' ability to critically assess government approaches to health promotion and prevention of drug-related harm

1. Describe commonly used drugs in Australia and their patterns of use
2. Describe the ideas that have informed public health responses to alcohol and other drug use
3. Critically assess the way drug issues are represented in the Australian media
4. Outline strategies that have been implemented to reduce drug-related harm and their effectiveness
5. Evaluate the role interest groups play in the development of drug policy
