Topic description

This topic introduces students to numeracy as a life skill that is important for living in the contemporary world. Students begin by exploring the difference between numeracy and mathematics and by making connections across all areas of the curriculum and to the world beyond the classroom. Students investigate the role of information communication technology as a tool to enhance learning and examine current research, theories and practice. Students evaluate a range of useful ICT.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Give students the knowledge, confidence and pedagogical skills to integrate numeracy activities across the curriculum
  • Introduce students to effective ways to use ICT to enhance learning
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Articulate the importance of numeracy as a life skill for living in the contemporary world
  2. Describe the difference between numeracy and mathematics
  3. Identify links between numeracy, all areas of the curriculum and to life in the community
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the power and use of statistics to influence people's thinking
  5. Use and develop activities with learning objects
  6. Critique and use a range of ICT tools in safe, responsible and ethical ways
  7. Develop digital resources to achieve identified learning outcomes
