Topic description

This topic explores contemporary issues in middle schooling. The areas examined include the developmental needs of adolescents, areas for action for middle schooling, the challenges of being a middle years educator, the role of middle schooling in a changing world and middle school curriculum frameworks. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to explore their role as a teacher-researcher in the area of middle schooling.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Examine constructions and representations of adolescence
  • Investigate the areas for action in bridging the gap between middle schooling philosophy and practice
  • Consider the challenges of being a middle schooling teacher
  • Examine middle schooling curriculum frameworks
  • Consider self efficacy and the role of research in forming and informing the middle years educator and middle schooling
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of unique needs of adolescent students
  2. Reflect on the evidence as to whether middle schooling works in order to make considered judgements and take action on middle schooling
  3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the roles and challenges associated with being a middle schooling teacher
