Topic description

This topic inducts students into an intermediate level study of Biblical (Koine) Greek. Grammar, syntax and idiomatic usage of the language are studied via the reading of more complex passages from the New Testament and the Septuagint. An introduction to textual criticism is given.

Educational aims

In this topic, students will:

  • Enhance their understanding of grammar, syntax and idiomatic usage of biblical (Koine) Greek
  • Extend their facility with reading and translating passages from the New Testament and Septuagint
  • Develop their use of lexicographical aids to assist in translation and parsing
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Translate more complex passages from the Greek New Testament, with appropriate lexicographical aids
  2. Recognise the nuances of biblical (Koine) Greek texts
  3. Identify the structure and nuances of the English language
