Topic description

This topic inducts students into an advanced level study of Biblical (Koine) Greek. Grammar, syntax and idiomatic usage of the language are studied via the reading of complex passages from the New Testament, the Septuagint and extra-canonical material, including papyri and inscriptions. An introduction to papyrology is given.

Educational aims

In this topic students will:

  • Enhance their understanding grammar, syntax and idiomatic usage of biblical (Koine) Greek
  • Extend their facility with reading and translating passages from the New Testament, the Septuagint, papyri and inscriptions
  • Be introduced to the study of papyrology
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Translate complex passages from the Greek New Testament and other Koine Greek texts
  2. Recognise the nuances of Greek texts, including the cultural and material aspects of reading and writing in the Graeco-Roman world
