Topic description
This topic examines the ways that public and private policies can either support or impede the translation of research science into marketable products and services. Critical processes such as audience-appropriate "pitching", consideration of intellectual property issues and engaging in the industry cycle will all be investigated.
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop and extend students' understanding of and skills in:
- Converting fundamental science to applied science and prototypes
- Intellectual property
- The industry cycle
- The Australian science and innovation system
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Describe the conversion of research to a marketable product or process
- Analyse the role of IP protection in innovation case studies
- Explain how policies can influence the application of ideas in industry
