Topic description
This topic builds on the theory and practice of career and vocational development introduced in DSRS2237: Employment, DSRS3222: Counselling and DSRS3234: Case Management. The focus is vocational evaluation, counselling and planning; awareness of and practical application of vocational assessment tools; completion of job, worksite and labour market analyses and reports; job matching and placement, and post-placement support.
Educational aims
This topic focuses on the theory and practice of vocational evaluation, assessment, counselling and planning skills that are applicable in a range of vocational rehabilitation service settings, with an emphasis on gaining:

  • an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to facilitate the central roles, functions and stages of the vocational rehabilitation process from client and employer perspectives

  • an awareness of and ability to apply vocational assessment tools and techniques to facilitate the determination of achievable vocational goals

  • an understanding of ethical and professional issues associated with the vocational rehabilitation process.

Expected learning outcomes
As an outcome of participating in this topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • a theoretical understanding of the vocational rehabilitation process and tools available to facilitate each stage

  • Increased awareness of factors affecting the current and future labour market, and of the impact of injury and disability on career development and opportunities for sustained employment participation

  • enhanced awareness of and capacity to apply vocational assessment tools and counselling, planning and report-writing skills to the vocational rehabilitation process, from determining transferable skills and conducting job analyses, to placement and post-placement support

  • an ability to work individually and with team members to assist clients and employers to formulate specific goals related to their needs

  • increased awareness of and ability to apply counselling and case management knowledge and skills to the vocational rehabilitation process

  • understanding the importance of ethical, professional and self-care issues in effective maintenance of human service roles in vocational rehabilitation
