Topic description
The emphasis of Speech Pathology Practicum 4 is on the practical application of the theory gained across the program in a block placement within a workplace. This unit will further facilitate students' understanding and application of client management, through practical experience with clients presenting with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties. The topic integrates a Community Education/Health promotion project, enabling students to examine primary health models of service delivery, and facilitating integration of factors relating to the social determinants of health.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • Further facilitate students' understanding and application of client management, through practical experience with clients presenting with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties.

  • Assist students to demonstrate Entry Level competency as assessed by COMPASS®.

  • Prepare students for workplace context and the job application process through completing a Speech Pathology job application.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this unit, students will:

  • Demonstrate competence in all aspects of speech pathology practice sufficient to enter the profession

  • Demonstrate entry level practical skills in

    • Generic professional competencies of Reasoning, Communication, Lifelong Learning and Professionalism

    • CBOS competencies of Assessment, Analysis and Interpretation, Planning of Speech Pathology Intervention and Speech Pathology Intervention, Planning, Maintaining and Delivering Speech Pathology Services, Professional, Group and Community Education and Professional Development

  • Take independent responsibility for aspects of speech pathology practice unless the situation is new or a number of features of the client and/or workplace combine to create complexity

  • Relate theory to practice

  • Understand the process involved in applying for a Speech Pathology position, and address the Essential and Desirable criteria of a Speech Pathology Job and Person Specification.
