This topic is taught and assessed as a continuum.

Topic description

A thesis of not more than 20,000 words. The thesis may be a critical survey of existing knowledge or an original contribution to the subject. In either case it should demonstrate the student's ability to collect and evaluate information; to test and defend an argument or thesis; and to examine critically the major theories in the area of enquiry.

Educational aims

This topic aims to provide training in a manner that fosters the development of a candidate's independent research skills, and to develop the attributes associated with research practice.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Locate and make appropriate use of relevant source materials
  2. Analyse sources, develop arguments and draw conclusions
  3. Contribute to knowledge through independent research
  4. Exercise scholarly judgement
