Topic description

Students design and carry out an independent empirical investigation under the supervision of academic staff and formally report their findings in a thesis.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with experience designing and carrying out health-related research
  • Prepare graduates who will be critical consumers of research, and who will be able to design, conduct, and write up a research project themselves
  • Develop an advanced level of knowledge in the area of specialisation
  • Develop verbal and written skills relevant to research
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critique research and scholarly literature for strengths and weaknesses in their conception, design, analysis, and presentation
  2. Develop and justify a research question(s) or hypotheses based on prior research and/or theory
  3. Design a study to appropriately address a research question(s) (or to test hypotheses)
  4. Construct an ethics application for health-related research
  5. Analyse and effectively synthesise research data and communicate research results/findings
  6. Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge in an area of specialisation
  7. Defend limitations and justify avenues for future research
