Topic description
HLTH7010C, HLTH7010D, HLTH7010E and HLTH7010F together comprise the Health Honours Thesis (18 units total) and support part-time study. Students design and carry out an independent empirical investigation under the supervision of academic staff and formally report their findings in a thesis of 10,000-15,000 words in length. They are taught and assessed as a continuum and students must undertake both in the same academic year.
Educational aims
The educational aims of the Health Honours thesis are to:

  • Provide students with experience designing and carrying out health-related research

  • Prepare graduates who will be critical consumers of research, and who will be able to design, conduct, and write up a research project themselves

  • Develop an advanced level of knowledge in the area of specialisation

  • Develop verbal and written skills relevant to research
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critique research and scholarly literature for strengths and weaknesses in their conception, design, analysis, and presentation

  2. Develop and justify a research question(s) or hypotheses based on prior research and/or theory

  3. Design a study to appropriately address a research question(s) (or to test hypotheses)

  4. Construct an ethics application for health-related research

  5. Analyse and effectively synthesise research data and communicate research results/findings

  6. Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge in an area of specialisation

  7. Defend limitations and justify avenues for future research.
