Topic description

In this topic students may undertake studies and/or research on an approved topic or within an approved subfield of study under the supervision of a member of the academic staff.

The equivalent of approximately 6,000 words of written work, on a subject or subjects approved by the supervisor, will need to be submitted for assessment at honours level.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide an opportunity for honours level students to engage in supervised academic and professional analysis of issues and problems within the fields of political and international studies
  • Inform students about the state of the academic literature and political practice with respect to a select range of issues
  • Encourage advanced-level verbal discussion and academic argument
  • Further develop students' skills in academic research, bibliographic analysis and professional writing
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Engage in advanced-level academic and professional analysis of issues and problems within the fields of political and international studies
  2. Be informed about the state of the academic literature and political practice with respect to a select range of issues
  3. Demonstrate research skills in an area of academic study which they have a interest
