Topic description

In this topic, students will develop an advanced understanding of social work theories, including crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, trauma informed practice, mindfulness practice, attachment theory, anti-oppressive practice, feminism, narrative therapy and solution-focused practice. In addition to selecting and applying theories, students will critique theories. Students will further develop their practice framework in preparation for social work practice.

Educational aims

In this topic, students will build on their learning in Social Work Theories. This topic aims to further develop students’ ability to appropriately select, apply and critique a range of social work theories. Students will strengthen their practice framework in preparation for professional practice as social workers.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to able to:

  1. Appraise a range of social work theories, demonstrating a depth and breadth of understanding of theories and their application to practice
  2. Assess critically social work theories and identify their strengths and limitations
  3. Defend your practice framework in critical consideration of the notion of professional identity
