The honours Design Project is intended to promote the development of research & development, communication and technical skills through an in-depth investigation of a particular design problem under the guidance of a supervisor. The Design Project is not merely a large system-building exercise. Rather, the principle objective is for students to show initiative, acquire new knowledge, develop basic research and creative skills, and develop innovation insight in assimilating and critically evaluating ideas. The nature of the investigation will depend on the project itself but is likely to include: problem analysis, a literature search; problem research, the identification (in collaboration with the supervisor) of a suitable problem/project; the planning and management of the project; resulting in the development of an innovative product design solution; the development and presentation of seminar(s); and, the production of a thesis embodying the methods and results of the project. The honours Design Project is intended to allow students to follow a comprehensive professional product design process, leading to a highly resolved, innovative solution.
