Topic description

Non-linear image processing, mathematical morphology, image enhancement, edge detection, image interpolation including bilinear, MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) and other methods, frequency and spatial domain based approaches for super-resolution image reconstruction, motion estimation and analysis, optical flow, image registration, and various image processing techniques.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide the student with knowledge of the theories and applications of image processing
  • Familiarize the student with some important concepts and analytical techniques for linear and non-linear image processing
  • Give the student some experience in image processing applications and research using MATLAB and other programming tools
  • Familiarize the student with a broad range of operators and processing techniques for image reconstruction, filtering, enhancement, expansion, motion estimation, and other selected areas
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Exploit a number of image processing techniques
  2. Design adequate, effective, efficient, and reliable image processing mechanisms
  3. Apply image transforms when appropriate
  4. Extract information from images and image sequences using suitable computer algorithms
  5. Attain competence on the use of MATLAB and other computer development tools for image processing research and applications
