Topic description

Electronic design for manufacture: signal transmission, design for signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility, advanced routing techniques, multi-channel design, design accounting for mechanical, manufacturing and commercial constraints.

Design project: design methodologies, identifying client needs, assessment and evaluation of engineering designs, developing design specifications, project management and documentation, teamwork, leadership and mentoring, self-reflection, creativity and innovation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to develop in students an advanced and practical understanding of electronic design, through studying and applying:

  • Methodologies for developing solutions to complex and ill-defined electronic engineering design problems
  • The integration of theory and methods across the range of electronic engineering subjects
  • The assessment and evaluation of engineering designs
  • Techniques for determining design specifications from clients, eg the social, political, international, economic and environmental context of a problem as well as the technical requirements
  • Project management and documentation methods and tools in the electronic engineering context, eg ISO9001
  • The variety of roles in electronic engineering design groups, eg teamwork, leadership and mentoring
  • Creativity, innovation and self-reflection
  • The use of professional electronic design tools
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and practical understanding of electronic design
  2. Develop creative and innovative solutions to complex electronic engineering design problems
  3. Demonstrate communication and teamwork skills appropriate for a professional engineer
  4. Use electronic design, project management and documentation methods and tools
