Topic description
Introduction; mechanical, chemical and physical properties, microstructure and processing of construction materials including concrete, steels, asphalt, polymers and polymeric composites and wood. Waterproof materials; heat-insulating materials; sound-absorbing materials; finishing materials; materials for extreme conditions (bushfire, earthquake and explosion); constructability; sustainability and durability of civil materials. Advanced civil materials such as nano-composites reinforced with carbon nanotubes, nanoclay, nanosilica and graphene sheets.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the microstructure, mechanical, chemical and physical properties, processing, evaluation, and applications of a wide range of construction materials (both traditional and advanced materials).
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the microstructure, properties and applications of various engineering materials used in civil structures and infrastructures
  2. Analyse the microstructure and mechanical properties of construction materials to predict the strength and life of structures
  3. Apply technical aspects involved in selection of construction materials in extreme conditions
  4. Understand the concept of using advanced civil materials for strengthening and rehabilitation of different structures
  5. Practise the processing and mechanical assessments of civil materials
