Topic description

Advanced foundation design and analysis covers the analysis and design of shallow foundations under combined loading, pile foundations under vertical, lateral loading and combined loading as well as ground movement. This topic also covers the analysis of piles used to increase slope stability, foundations in rocks and intermediate geomaterials, foundations on expansive soils and collapsible soils. The topic will require students to carry out analysis and design of foundations for infrastructure using physical modelling, analytical and numerical methods through project based learning.

Educational aims

This topic aims to give students an understanding of the concepts associated with geotechnical engineering.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse and design shallow and deep foundation subjected to combined loading (vertical, lateral and moment)
  2. Analyse and design of piles used to increase slope stability
  3. Analyse and design of foundations in rocks and intermediate geomaterials
  4. Analyse and design foundations on expansive soils and collapsible soils
  5. Develop spreadsheets to perform parametric studies and produce design charts for geotechnical design problems
  6. Analyse foundations using computer software
  7. Design and conduct experimental investigation of the behaviour of foundations through physical modelling
