Topic description
This topic is designed for current and future teachers (LOTE, ESL/TESOL). It introduces fundamental theoretical and practical issues in Second Language Acquisition from linguistic, psychological and educational perspectives. The topic compares and contrasts first and second language acquisition, examines the personal and sociocultural characteristics influencing the language learning process and stresses the inter-related nature of the aspects of language learning.

Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to fundamental theoretical and practical issues in Second Language Acquisition from linguistic, psychological and educational perspectives

  • compare and contrast first and second language acquisition

  • examine the personal and socio-cultural characteristics influencing the language learning process

  • give students the opportunity to reflect on their own language learning behaviour and/or teaching practices
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify, observe and analyse the personal and socio-cultural characteristics influencing the language learning process

  • elaborate an informed philosophy of language education that could be adapted to their current/future professional environments
