Topic description
This topic addresses psychological theory and research in a set of current domains of scientific inquiry. It illustrates the link between knowledge, theory and research, by showing how theory serves to explain human behaviour and experience, the reciprocity of theory and research, and how theories are evaluated and modified. Although the content may vary from year to year, possible domains are social, cross-cultural, lifespan, cognition, emotion, health, and biological psychology.
Educational aims
The topic aims to

  • Advance students’ knowledge of current theory and research in psychology

  • Demonstrate the reciprocal connection between theory and research, and how theory is evaluated.
Expected learning outcomes
On the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Explain knowledge in current areas of psychological inquiry

  2. Explain the purpose of psychological theory

  3. Apply their knowledge to the evaluation of theories.
