Topic description

Molecular Biotechnology is a selective topic supporting the postgraduate students who do not have sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the topic BIOL8004 DNA to Genome GE. This topic provides information on the basis of molecular biology as needed for an understanding of molecular biotechnology. Information covered includes the basics of DNA replication and DNA transcription and the translation of genetic material into protein.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • To provide students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of molecular biology needed to understand molecular biotechnology
  • To prepare students for further study of biotechnology processes and products involving molecular biology
  • To provide students the information that will prepare them to undertake the topic BIOL9004 DNA to Genome GE
  • To include activities which facilitate students working in a group environment in tutorials as well as encourage self-directed learning through preparation of individual assignments
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the basis of DNA replication
  2. Understand the process of DNA transcription and give examples of the steps involved
  3. Provide an explanation of the process of protein translation
  4. Provide an outline of how molecular biology is utilised in biotechnology
  5. Work individually to produce written assignments in accordance with the principles of Academic Integrity
  6. Work in a team environment to discuss molecular biology, particularly as it relates to biotechnology
