Course context
Teaching is delivered in a clinical format using case presentations and management decision making. Lectures, tutorials, workshops and electronic delivery are employed.

Topic description
This topic explores further the practice of ophthalmology with particular emphasis on the ocular therapeutic practice of optometry under the following sections:

  • Anterior Eye Disorders

  • Uveitis/Scleritis/Episcleritis

  • Diagnosis and Management of Glaucoma

  • Management of Cataract/ Post-operative care of cataract patients

  • Post-operative care and management of refractive surgery patients

  • Management of posterior segment conditions

  • Ophthalmic Surgery

  • Shared Care/Co-management with Ophthalmologists

Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • Provide students with thorough knowledge of the legal, ethical and practical aspects of prescribing, posterior segment disease management and ophthalmic procedures.

  • Develop skills to enable the management of anterior eye conditions, eye wall and intraocular inflammation, glaucoma, post-operative care of the cataract and refractive surgery patient and participation in shared care models.

  • Empower students to use learning approaches that suit them.

  • Allow development of information acquisition and critical appraisal skills.

  • Allow development of interpersonal and teaching skills for effective group/team work.

  • Allow development of life-long learning skills.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
