OCCT8005 - Occupational Therapy Practice 4

Content from the first year of the Master of Occupational Therapy and the required prerequisites

This topic will enable students to extend their knowledge and skills of occupational therapy practice to an advanced level in the areas of visual, cognitive and physical rehabilitation across a range of settings.

The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework will inform examination and analysis of the occupational implications.

Key practice areas that will be covered include vision, neurological and brain injury, amputations, spinal cord injury, upper limb conditions including burns, driving, palliative care, work and injury prevention.

The aim of this topic is to extend students’ application of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, and key theoretical approaches to practice. Students will refine core skills in occupational therapy practice in the areas of visual, cognitive and physical rehabilitation.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

Analyse complex case scenarios and apply these to relevant models of practice to determine an occupational evaluation and intervention plan in the context of selected conditions and practice environments
Demonstrate clinical reasoning and practice skills relevant to working with individuals in the areas of visual, cognitive and physical rehabilitation
Apply reflective practice while working with individuals who have visual, cognitive and physical rehabilitation needs
Explain and demonstrate the importance of practicing in a culturally responsive and culturally safe manner at an advanced level
Explain and demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ experiences of health, wellbeing and the impact of these on occupational engagement at an advanced level.
