This topic aims to enable students to achieve advanced knowledge of surgical and anaesthetic practice in disaster deployment situations and to apply this knowledge in a range of practical and academic contexts.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Critically analyse the epidemiological, legal and ethical issues that pertain to a disaster response
- Identify and discuss non-surgical clinical considerations in the management of mass casualties
- Critically analyse surgical and anaesthetic techniques
- Critically analyse anaesthetic techniques and risks in an austere/disaster environment
- Apply resource management principles to the surgical management of mass casualties
