Assumed knowledge
The Master of Physiotherapy has a number of pre-requisites for admission, and students must demonstrate a minimum amount of academic achievement in the areas of Physiology, Anatomy, Communication Skills, Research Methods, and Social Perspectives in Health before being admitted to the course. These admission requirements form the basis of all assumed knowledge for this topic.
Assessment
Written Examination (60%); Practical Examination (40%).
Topic description
The focus in this topic will be the assessment and treatment of patients with spinal and complex musculoskeletal disorders. The selection, application and evaluation of physiotherapy examination and intervention techniques will be developed and refined through case based learning and practical skills tutorial sessions, and in consultation with the evidence based literature. Client-centered practice, including legal, ethical and psychosocial aspects of patients' rights and choices and involvement in physiotherapy management will be discussed.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to establish specific knowledge and skills related to physiotherapy for spinal musculoskeletal conditions. General principles of physiotherapy examination and treatment covered in previous topics will be further developed through a biopsychosocial approach to assessment and management of more complex patient presentations.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a graduate entry knowledge of spinal and complex musculoskeletal pathologies
  2. Engage in a collaborative client centred model of practice
  3. Plan and implement efficient, effective, collaborative evidence based physiotherapy assessments for clients presenting with a spinal and/or complex musculoskeletal conditions
  4. Plan and implementation safe and effective evidence based physiotherapy interventions in collaboration with the client
  5. Recognise the need for, and implement, appropriate educational strategies to empower and collaboratively manage patient’s physical health
  6. Recognize clinical situations that are outside their scope of competence and the seek appropriate inter-professional support in a timely manner
  7. Review the continuation of physiotherapy using relevant outcome measures with the aim of facilitating the client’s optimal participation in their everyday life
  8. Demonstrate effective communication to support the development of trust and rapport in professional relationships with the client and relevant others
  9. Record and effectively communicate physiotherapy assessment findings, outcomes and decisions
  10. Access, gather, interpret and apply information to continuously improve practice and demonstrate the ability to reflect on own practice.
