Topic description

This topic will introduce students to the theoretical framework for understanding the effect of traumatic experiences on individuals, families and communities. It will provide students with various approaches and interventions for working with people who have experienced trauma. Students will be expected to be able to apply selected interventions to practice situations.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Familiarise students with concepts theory and intervention approaches relevant to people who have experienced trauma
  • Provide students with specialised knowledge about trauma and traumatic situations
  • Help students understand and explore the link between grief and trauma
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate contemporary debates and theoretical approaches to trauma
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the impact of trauma
  3. Recognise traumatic aspects of the specific experiences of populations such as war veterans, refugees, Aboriginal people, and people who experience violence and abuse
  4. Analyse a specific case situation in terms of how trauma concepts are relevant
  5. Identify appropriate interventions with persons who have experienced traumatic events
