REMH8012 Project Management

This topic provides health professionals with an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge necessary to successfully design and manage projects that are relevant to isolated, remote and Indigenous health contexts worldwide. A simple conceptual model for project management is presented and considered in the light of community development approaches. Project plans and known outcomes from two projects highly relevant to remote and Indigenous Primary Health Care services are critically analysed.

This topic aims to develop students' knowledge, skills and attitudes for planning, implementing and evaluating projects within a Primary Health Care framework. Local and international examples are used to provide an opportunity for students to apply community development principles to profession specific practice within isolated, remote and Indigenous contexts where they work or plan to work in the future.

1. Review the history and contemporary application of project management theory
2. Contextualise knowledge about project management approaches to design a project proposal for a remote and/or Indigenous context which illustrates key elements of a project life cycle
3. Critically reflect on the implications of a community development-oriented approach to project management
4. Evaluate the importance of the local, national and international context of a project
5. Clarify the differences between outcomes and outputs of projects and apply this knowledge to evaluate key factors with the potential to impact on project outcomes and outputs in the Indigenous and/or remote context
