Topic description
This topic surveys some of the major approaches to media and audience - including media effects and structural models (e.g., gender, class, ethnicity), interpretive, filmic and televisual spectatorship, fan-based - and methods for conducting audience research. We will consider the potentials and limitations of each of these and the challenges which newer media pose to various conceptions of audience.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • present a study program covering key concepts and major debates in audience studies

  • support students to pursue a higher reading program in audience studies

  • support students to develop theoretical frameworks around 'audience', for use in their own research and media production projects
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will:

  • have completed an advanced reading program in audience studies

  • be able to interrogate critically various traditions in contemporary audience studies

  • be able to situate their own projects relative to these traditions
