Topic description
In this topic students will increase their knowledge and understanding of sustainable development and management of health care systems at a local, national and global level.
Educational aims
In this topic students will examine capacity building and fostering change in health services to promote sustainability. They will be introduced to health sustainability in relation to development, globalisation, epidemiology, population health, poverty, health ecosystems, logistics for commodities and food security. There will be a focus on human resources, monitoring and evaluation of health services, information systems, continuums of care and social determinants of health, as well as collaboration between communities, government, UN agencies and non-governmental organisations.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Discuss the influence of globalisation on health

  • Discuss how the social determinants of health inform health policy

  • Apply the principles of Primary Health Care to global policy or health program analysis

  • Critique an existing global health policy or primary health program

  • Identify the role of health professionals in informing, implementing and evaluating global policy and health strategies

  • Analyse the process of partnership and sustainability in achieving improved health outcomes.
