Topic description

This topic will focus on technological interventions designed to promote outcomes of clinical rehabilitation, and explore associated current research. In an ever-changing arena, we will examine new innovations and current practice, such as immersive and non-immersive virtual reality technologies, robotics, and digital health technologies. We will review the underlying principles for using such technologies and discuss considerations for implementation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop students' understanding of the key principles of using technologies in rehabilitation
  • Provide students with a general overview of available innovative technologies and the latest evidence to support their use
  • Broaden students' understanding of how to apply clinical reasoning when incorporating technologies into rehabilitation practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Analyse and apply the underlying theories of using technologies in rehabilitation, including principles of neuroplasticity, motor learning and motivation
  2. Select an appropriate approach and program and critically appraise with sound reasoning, the use of new technologies in patients receiving rehabilitation services, including: virtual reality, robotics and digital health
  3. Develop a rehabilitation plan incorporating new technologies
  4. Synthesise current evidence regarding the role of technology-based interventions in supporting rehabilitation practice
