Topic description

This topic addresses the principles and application of exercise therapy by following the journeys of three different individuals with different diagnoses through phases of their rehabilitation: acute management, early transition to rehabilitation, inpatient rehabilitation, community integration and lifelong management.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Understand the principles of exercise prescription in a range of patient populations
  • Provide an opportunity for students to increase and apply their understanding of the key principles of exercise therapy in adult rehabilitation
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Reflect and analyse the benefits, guidelines, complications and limitations of exercise therapy
  2. Critically appraise the evidence on the application of exercise therapy in rehabilitation
  3. Select and interpret relevant assessment tools for use in screening and developing baseline measures for exercise programs in rehabilitation
  4. Develop an exercise therapy plan, incorporating relevant equipment and technology, for designated case studies
  5. Interpret and synthesise assessment and measurement of outcomes in exercise therapy
  6. Research and apply processes to facilitate a client's long-term maintenance of function by the use of exercise
