An understanding of the principles and practices of Cultural Heritage Management such as can be obtained in ARCH8018 Introduction to Cultural Heritage Management.

This topic builds on the framework provided by the topic ARCH8018 Introduction to Cultural Heritage Management and introduces students to the structure for preparing and writing a professional cultural heritage management plan (CHMP). CHMPs are one of the main tools used in heritage management planning and cover the closely related processes of documenting heritage places, assessing their cultural heritage values and level of significance, writing a clear and succinct statement of significance, and drafting sensible and structured conservation and management recommendations.

This topic aims to:

Provide students with the theoretical background to cultural heritage management planning and what constitutes a good cultural heritage management plan (CHMP)
Provide students with the detailed knowledge of the standard components of a CHMP
Allow students to apply this theoretical knowledge to a practical case study in their local area
Develop students' critical thinking skills, and extend their observation and assessment skills

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Understand what gives a place cultural heritage significance and how this relates to contemporary forms of social identity

Understand the major components of a cultural heritage management plan and understand the application of the Burra Charter to such a process

Assess the cultural heritage values of a place, and write a succinct statement of significance

Identify the various stakeholders involved in the heritage assessment process, undertake archival and other research into a heritage place, and incorporate all of this information into a coherent plan for conserving and managing a place's heritage values

Write a CHMP that is clear, concise and useful
